We went to the Dillard site early in the morning on Tuesday morning. We arrived at the site and got a quick introduction to the archeologists on the site who would be working with us. Crow Canyon is unique because it allows the public to work on archeology sites with trained and seasoned archeologists. The site was toured and we were able to see the great kiva and the pit house that were the current projects at the site. After the tour we were instructed in the way to collect the dirt samples from the site using the tools. The dirt and artifacts from the site are then taken to large hanging screens to separate the dirt and rocks and locate artifacts. The archeologists' have a trained eye and were able to find very small and dirty pieces of pottery sherds and other artifacts that would be used to determine the date and use of the site. The work was hard but rewarding and we were able to help find artifacts for the team. The next day in the lab we would be able to see what then happens to bagged artifacts from the site!
